Harrison-Dever Intake Crib
The Harrison Crib was built in 1900, the Dever crib added in 1935. The water intake cribs were modern marvels when they were originally built (1865 – 1935) and, imagine (!), workers tended to the cribs 24 hours a day.
The Harrison crib was decommissioned* in 1985 but the Dever crib is one of two, of the original nine, that continue to provide the city with drinking water.
* “Decommissioned” or closed after an ill-advised attempt to drain the tunnel that carried the water from the lake into the city. There’s always a story, always a controversy and usually a lawsuit.
