Magnificent, indeed

6:15 p.m., walking home

I couldn’t help but stop and appreciate the history of the scene while I was walking home from work last night.

In 1917, Pine Street is renamed “Michigan Avenue” in anticipation of the completion of the DuSable Bridge, a.k.a the Michigan Ave Bridge, opening in 1920. Soon after, the 21-story South Tower of the Wrigley Building was completed in 1921. Then, in 1925, the neo-Gothic Tribune Tower completed and opened to the public. Just before the stock-market crash, the stylistic mashup that was then known as The Medinah Athletic Club, now the Intercontential Hotel, and it’s kooky “Onion Dome” opens in ’29.
