block 37

International Style

The residential tower at Block 37 for the “geometric” weekly challenge hosted by @proj52 over on instagram.

The history of Block 37, 108 North State Street, is classic Chicago.

In 1973 Richard J. Daley announced an urban renewal district in the North Loop.

In 1989 Richard M. Daley (son of Richard J.) approved demolishing the then existing structures in favor of a multi-use skyscraper with retail, residential and office spaces.

There were a whole bunch of shenanigans and several Mayors between Richard M. and Richard J.

The block remained vacant until construction began on a 16 story building in 2005.

In 2016, I watched the completion of the residential tower, the final phase, (pictured below) from my balcony across the street.

That’s 43 years from concept to complete!
