the bowman

One half of a pair

Ivan Meštrović‘s The Bowman, 1928. Chicago by way of Zagreb.

The Bowman and the Spearman make for a formidable pair at the intersection of Congress Parkway and Michigan Avenue. This image was made on a sunny Sunday afternoon during a walk Buckingham Fountain. With consideration of Meštrović’s intent, the image is presented in greyscale, the blues filtered and contrast adjusted a bit.

“The omitting of the weapons was intentional, as the artist preferred that they be ‘left to the imagination while attention is focused upon the bold lines of the musculature of both man and beast…”
