Alaskan Way Viaduct
The seemingly always soon to be gone but never forgotten Alaskan Way Viaduct.
Like many Seattleites, I have a love / hate relationship with the Viaduct. While I appreciate the earnest original goals, the structure has far exceeded it’s usefulness (capacity, risk…) and is a design of a time long past.
Still, a Seattle icon.
The closer to the demolition, the more frequent the closures of the Viaduct. I always take special care to be in and around the Market when the Viaduct is closed. Listening to the sounds of the Sound, the Ferries, the birds…; making images of the structure and work of people long gone but still appreciated.
