Unfortunately, Delta doesn’t offer a direct flight between Chicago and Seattle. While I could choose another airline, Delta is my favorite domestic carrier and I am (perhaps) an unreasonably loyal customer.

Booking flights to or from Seattle and Chicago presents a couple of interesting choices. Since I sleep well, or at least as well, on planes I prefer red-eyes; flight duration is also a priority, as is price. Once I factor in my preferences, I’m typically left with the choice to connect through Minneapolis or Detroit. When flying West to East I almost always choose Detroit. Yes, Detroit is East of Chicago. The early morning flight from Detroit to Chicago over Lake Michigan and the approach over the city to ORD is more often than not stunning.

Watching the sun rise over and illuminate the lake and the city is an inspiring way to start the day.
