the more you look…

…the less you see.

The Art Institute is open late and waves admission fees on Thursday evenings.

Last night, our date night, we meandered out for a walk along Michigan Avenue, dinner and a bit of gazing at art and people watching at The Art Institute.

Seurat’s “A Sunday on La Grand Jatte” is always a treat and always reminds me of the lovely scene in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.

A John Hughes’s quote was rattling around in my head last night.

Explaining the pointillist style — and movie making, teenage angst and adult insecurity — Hughes says, “I always thought this painting was sort of like making a movie, the pointillist style,” he says. “You don’t have any idea what you’ve made until you step back from it. … The more he looks at it, there’s nothing there. He fears that the more you look at him, the less you see.”

— John Hughes
